Background Information. This is part of recent conversations that I have been making regarding the USA visit by a delegation from the Kinijit Laelay Miker Bet (LMB), particularly by a group which tries to give powers to itself by reason that the members were imprisoned and released(R-LMB).  The R-LMB has about 20 members while the LMB has 60 members. A five member R-LMB delegation to the USA has been and continues to engage in fomenting division among Kinijit leaders and supporters.  Initially the division was conducted through their friends, notably Andargatchew Tsege and Berhanu Mewa, who were members of KIL (Kinijit International Leadership).  After the release of the imprisoned LMB, the KIL was disbanded but the division is furthered by the R-LMB delegates to the USA.

Here are some highlights from the VOA intervies ( Interview with Wz. Birtukan Mideksa and Dr. Hailu Araya on VOA ) of two of the R-LMB delegates to the USA.  My comments are placed in square brackets.

1) In the VOA interviews Wo. Bertukan flat out asserts that Kinijit laws do not give special powers to Chairman Hailu even when the movement is under serious duress. [However, she did not explain by what Kinijit laws that she as Vice Chairman has any powers, or why she and a few other imprisoned LMB have special powers to negate the will of the chairman and perform tasks in the name of Kinijit. Her answer is illogical and does not provide a legal basis for her actions or the of the R-LMB delegates she parades in the USA.]

2) Dr. Hailu reported that the imprisoned LMB were held in four separate  locations, with the location where Chairman Hailu was imprisoned having more LMB's.  He had not mentioned if there was a time at which all the imprisoned LMB held conferences while they were in jail.  He did not indicate how the votes in support of any determinations in jail were made. Yet, he asserts that determinations were made democratically while they
were in jail.

[In addition to the fact that there are no special powers given by the Kinijit laws to any small group of this LMB, for Dr. Hailu “shikshukta” among friends while in jail is democracy. Dr. Hailu's assertion that the LMB "decision while in jail was democratically conducted” is illogical and does not provide any basis for his actions or the R-LMB delegate of which he is part to parade in the USA.

Dr. Hailu's assertions are also countered by the statements of another imprisoned LMB, Wo. Negist who testified on Sept 24 radio interview, that she never participated in any LMB determination.  Wo. Bertukan's and Dr. Hailu's credibility is in serious question by the testimony of Wo Negist.  Why are the select few, 15 R-LMB intent on giving special powers to themselves and to present illogical and incorrect testimonials?  They must have hidden agendas.]

3)  To the question that R-LMB, while still in jail, had caused the problems in
the North American Kinijit supporters, Wo. Bertukan paraphrased it to assert that determinations made by a select imprisoned LMB had brought, namely the appointment of the KIL had brought the problems in the North America.  She had also asserted that the KIC was appointed by the approval of Chairman Hailu that added 12 delegates to the KIL, a move that she did not approve of.  Dr. Hailu agreed that he did not approve of it
either.

4) The KIL, which claimed to have leadership over Kinijit, was
disbanded from its political claims before the R-LMB came to the USA.
Since the problem that the R-LMB had caused in North America was resolved before the R-LMB took a trip why did the R-LMB came to the USA, was the question of VOA.. Neither Wo .Bertukan nor Dr. Hailu had any logical answer.

5)  Since the KIC is not a problem that the R-LMB caused, why does the R-LMB
take a trip to solve a problem it did not cause was a direct question asked by VOA.  Neither Wo. Bertukan nor Dr. Hailu had any logical answer. Even when the interviewer hinted that the LMB as a whole ought to provide answers to such issues, Wo. Bertukan and Dr. Hailu provided incoherent responses.  [It is obvious the R-LMB has different agenda.]

Except for Chairman Hailu , according to Wo. Bertukan and Dr. Hailu the remaining R-LMB did not approve of the KIC.  Yet, Wo. Bertukan abrogates to herself powers that she thinks will allow her to disband the KIC.  She asserts that the KIC is disbanded.  [Wo. Bertukan is telling an untruth here for the KIC is well and is working. She really cannot do anything about it.  The KIC supports the Kinijit party and she appears not to stand for it.]

6) One of the questions asked was  why the R-LMB did not focus more on the issues in Ethiopia instead of rushing  to visit foreign Lands- should not they have instead worked as indicated by Chairman Hailu of the legal issues, encouraged supporters in Ethiopia, visited families whose loved one’s were killed?

Dr. Hailu replied that the R-LMB had discussed on these issues at length and had determined that instead of giving change from their pockets to the families of the hurt, they wish to engage in long range solutions such as the work of NGO’s. Dr Hailu did not elaborate if he was going to form NGO’s or how such would be formed. {He hopes that he has deflected the seriously misguided and untimely trip the R-LMB embarked on.]

7) Another question asked was if the R-LMB felt that they had brought unison among the divided supporters or increased the Kinijit support, or if they had spawned division.  The interviewer stated that some had said or written “minew b’almetatchehu, minewb’altefetatchu !”  Wo. Bertukan replied that they had inspired the supporters, and that they were warmly received.

Concluding remarks.

The R-LMB assert special powers because they claim that as members of the imprisoned Laeley Miker Bet (LMB) they had democratically followed the Kinijit laws while they were in jail.  Are they implying that democracy works only in TPLF jails?

The R-LMB must have a hidden agenda.  How else can they react so irrationally and provide illogical and incoherent answers to simple questions paused by VOA.

It appears that Chairman Hailu had felt that he was working with people who had the good of the Kinijit party at heart.  He signed letters announcing the arrival of the delegates. He signed letters authorizing an ad hoc committee to receive the delegates.  He then asked the delegates to wait for a couple of weeks so that all would work to bring the feuding North America Kinijit supporters into one fold.  He specifically warned that a
trip taken by the R-LMB alone will not bring unity.  Apparently, all the  R-LMB needed chairman Hailu for was to give them cover for what it is that they wished to do.  Now that the chairman had signed announcing the presence of delegation and authorizing a receiving ad hoc committee they were ready to do their project.  Unlike what the R-LMB preach their trip would foster and crystallize division among supporters. Moreover their
trip and interviews will bring division within the LMB.  Their agenda whether they announce it or not seems to have a purpose of dividing the  Kinijit as a tactic. Their actions belie their words. They must have an agenda that benefits from a division of Kinijit.  What might that agenda  be?

Is the answer to the question of what is the agenda of the R-LMB furnished by Professor Mesfin’s observation that there is a power struggle between Hailu and Berhanu.  Is a section of the R-LMB and its supporters run by Dr. Berhanu?
